Diesel’s xXx Anniversary: The Rock and Roll Circus

October 11th: Saturday’s main event at a DUMBO pier was a spectacle of circus and music and all that that would imply. I would have been content with one chip, but Diesel brought the entire Hot Chip band and the O’Fracas to open the rock and roll concert portion of the evening. Oh, and yes, CHAKA KHAN was in the house! I had to shed a tear of joy for such a great artist to perform three of her hits and share the stage with other performers. I knew N.E.R.D, M.I.A. (who only seemed pregnant after changing into a bra, open jacket, and a stretch skirt), and Franz Ferdinand would rock out.
The unexpected T.I. stole the show! He performed several hits including material from his current album Paper Trail - number one in the country. I had to chuckle a little bit when he told the crowd to buy his album when he is already number one. How else did he get there if we hadn’t already bought it?
In between sets, the crowd was entertained by DJs Joel and Benji of Good Charlotte. Those fortunate enough to secure a ticket for the Saturday night circus and arrive early at the tent were greeted by contortionists woman carrying a large yellow snake, and above the bar Little People were smoking, drinking, and playing cards. Other acts included a live marching band, aerial acrobatic performers, and Host Joey Arias who was dressed like a kinky soldier from Ancient Rome.
The crowd kept shifting from watching them to ravaging the food (hot dog, popcorn, funnel cake, cotton candy, and Tasti D-Lite) and open bar accompanied with Tropicana juice, Tava, or Red Bull. One person fell on the floor during their petite mal seizure which may have triggered by being continuously pushed by the crowd while waiting so long for a drink at the bar! The crowd was so tight that I saw designers Richie Rich and Baby Chic exit the VIP balcony area for fresh air. Other notable VIPs in attendance included Lindsay Lohan. Luckily, the fire marshal stepped in with simple instructions that thinned the crowd but allowed for the show to continue. I am so happy to have been part of the front allowed to stay.
If you were interested in grabbing tickets before the show you were given a chance to on Friday with the Diesel Store pre-party. The Union Square locale featured celebrity DJ Pete Rock, Little People ring masters, a gothic hell angel. The store served an assortment of beverages (mimosas, bloody mary’s, Guru energy drink, beer, water.) Hence people inside the store had an opportunity to be entertained as they bought the limited edition jeans embroidered with 1978 and 2008. Outside the store, people were treated with complimentary NY Daily News and Red Bull Cola.
Diesel spanned the globe by throwing parties in Beijing, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Athens, Amsterdam, Milan, Zurich, Munich, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Oslo, Helsinki, London and Sao Paulo. Happy Anniversary Diesel!
