Papermag 4th Annual Nightlife Awards

November 16th: “Who’s who of who cares?” is how Danillo and Amanda Lepore began the awards ceremony at Mansion. Everyone was either a D-list celebrity (defined as someone regularly featured in Gawker, GOAG, or DBTH) or aspiring to be one. At least, not being famous means you dress better and can hold your liquor. But, everyone is narcissistic as hell. Thus, Paper Magazine throws a “low brow MTV music awards-esque ceremony” to commemorate those in the nightlife business. Read on for details.
Thanks to doorman, Matt Oliver, my entrance was expedited, but the great thing about Mansion is that its so large, one rarely worries about hitting capacity. The nominees were given tables in the center of the main room and large Diesel gift bags. Bartenders quickly dispensed Absolut cocktails to others so everyone was well lubricated for the presenters’ awkward skits when the ceremony finally began.
Papermag is diehard hipster, instead of the winners being the Page Six “It” places of the year, the bars and parties where everyone is in a fedora and ultra tight unisex jeans are the shoo-ins to win. First award was Most Influential Nightlife People or something that I can’t remember because I was intent on chugging the rest of my drink, but the Retro Kids deservedly won. Santos Party House took home two awards, including Best Club. Shaw Promotions won Best Promoter; Best Hotel went to 60 Thompson; Indochine took Restaurant of the Year, and Opening Ceremony got Designer with Nightlife Influence. DJ Skeet Skeet got best DJ. Nicky Digital received best photographer.
Ally Hilfiger presented people’s choice for Best Bar, announcing nominees like 1Oak, Goldbar, and Submercer who she dubbed “a bust in the past” (hilarious!) but Angels and Kings took home the Kid Robot designed trophy. Underground favorite DBTH won Best Nightlife Blog which beat mainstream favorite Steve Lewis.
The only potential for a B-list celebrity celebrity was Samantha Ronson (who will naturally bring A-List Lindsay Lohan) but Michael Musto accepted her trophy on her behalf. He amusingly approached the stage with his gift bag and said he was too scared to leave it alone with all the shady people. That’s how you know we’re not famous, we care way too much about the swag!
Nobodies who are half-way somebodies I spotted included Leven Rambin, Matt Levine (Eldridge), Steve Lewis, Liam McMullan (how weird is it to party with your father?), Richie Rich, Amanda Lepore, Solange Knowles, Christian Siriano (Project Runway winner), Josie Smith-Malave (Top Chef), Keino Benjamin, Ally Hilfiger, Kristian Laliberte, and Isis (transgender contestant of America’s Next Top Model). If you recognize any of these names, consider yourself addicted to the nightlife scene.
Some of us were just born to party.
