“Heart Attack” Exhibit by Amanda Dolan

March 7th: One of the things I love about New York is the plethora of gallery openings. There are several a day everyday in city. Gallery openings are always a chance to check out art and usually involve some sort of alcoholic beverage (art + booze = a happy Mo). Saturday brought me to Soho to check out the work by mixed-media painter and self proclaimed femme-fatale, Amanda Dolan. She unveiled her annual exhibit at the Ward-Nasse Gallery.  This year’s theme is “Heart Attack” and differs from last year’s portrait-style “Call Me Crazy” exhibit. Amanda describes herself as being  drawn to avant-garde and mixed media art because it is mysterious and multi-layered. I would definitely say that “Heart Attack” is very girly and somewhat all over the place which is slightly reminiscent of Basquiat which is probably why I liked the exhibit so much.

In attendance were some notable reality stars and many of the who’s who among the New York City social scene. Guests included Apprentice alums Troy McClain and Kwame Jackson, Hell’s Kitchen Star Chefs Ji Cha and Seth Levine.

The artist is a Greenwich CT native who followed her artistic dreams to NYC. And when it specifically comes her exhibit she says ” I like to put a feminine twist into my work. I am always looking to capture the inside of a woman’s’ heart and mind. I really feel like we should celebrate the fact that women can be strange and chaotic- that’s what makes them beautiful and courageous.  My pieces are chaotic, pretty and scary, happy and sad- all the emotions we go through on an average day.  I am not concerned with perfection- its more about capturing an emotion in time- a flash of thought.”

Guests packed the small and very warm (yes I broke a sweat) Soho gallery as we sipped on Prosecco  and enjoyed mini cupcakes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery, and I must say they were the most delicious cupcakes I have ever had in my life! And I am not really much of a dessert person but I can say that they were so good I’m willing to gain 50 pounds, wind up with a gut, clogged arteries, and have to be wheeled out of my apartment those cupcakes were fantastic! Great art, yummy cupcakes, good times.

Cheers,

Mo
