The Character Project
On Thursday I had the pleasure of attending one of the night’s top three parties in the world, the launch of American Character: A Photographic Journey co-hosted by Vanity Fair and USA Network. During the summer of 2008, USA assembled a group of eleven photographers and asked them to capture the character of America. The result is a collection of beautiful and intriguing portraits as varied as the country itself. The photographs and book are part of the Character Project, an ongoing artistic initiative inspired by USA’s “Characters Welcome” brand. Chances are you’ve seen a Character Project poster on your local subway platform or billboard – they seem to be everywhere recently.
The photos are on display at the Stephan Weiss Studio, home of the Urban Zen Foundation. Parties at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Center always attract a lot of Hollywood and fashion celebs, and this night was no exception. Celebrity guests included Lucy Liu, Christian Siriano, Jeff Goldblum, Mena Suvari, Donna Karan, Rose McGowan, Rosie Perez, Rachel Roy, Elise Overland, Kipton Cronkite, Liam McMullan, Izzy Gold, and Yigal Azrouël among many others.
When I looked up, I was pleasantly surprised to see the beautiful DJ Sky Nellor (my fave) in the 2nd floor balcony DJ booth. Also in attendance were many of the subjects of the photos, including an adorable little girl with beautiful curly hair and her mom who traveled all the way from California to be there.
Tasty and creative hors d’oeuvres were provided by Creative Edge Parties, and attentive waitstaff never let anyone’s drink go empty. It’s quite easy to drink too much when you have a never-ending glass of champagne. My friend and I decided to cut ourselves off so that we could make it to our next party, and we had to turn away at least three waiters who offered to refill our glasses. Now that’s what I call service!
You can purchase the book online and check out the exhibit at 711 Greenwich Street.
