April 17th: BOMB Magazine, a nonprofit arts and culture mag that has nothing to do with bombs (or any other weaponry for that matter), recently celebrated its 28th Anniversary with a gala dinner and silent auction at the historic National Arts Club. I arrived just in time to grab a glass of wine and watch honorees Laurie Anderson & Lou Reed, Alanna Heiss, and Laurie Simmons & Carroll Dunham be toasted. The speakers were instructed to limit their toasts to no more than 3 minutes; however, almost none of them did. This didn’t seem to bother the attendees who obliviously continued their conversations in the back of the room, prompting performance artist Marina Abramovic to yell “SHUT UP” into the microphone. This just strengthened my view that speeches and parties don’t mix.

Boldfaced names in attendance included Abby Goldstein, Alina Kohlem, Klaus Biesenbach, Bryan Bradley, David Kramer, Jane Rose, Judy Hudson, Karen Lockhart, Lucy Freedman Sandler, Lokke Highstein, Michael Ward Stout, Piper Marshall, and designer Jill Stuart

After the toasts, I had a chance to browse the fabulous works of art by over 60 artists displayed on the walls for the silent auction. The event, which began with cocktails and canapés and finished with a private dinner, raised over $370,000 for BOMB to continue its mission of publishing interviews and essays in which emerging and established artists can speak openly about their work.
