In a city shrouded with reality and practicality, the William Bennett Gallery has welcomed imagination and irrationality to New York with its “Persistence of Dali” exhibition. Toting 150 exceptional proofs, rare prints, unique works and never-before-seen photographs, the gallery opened Thursday night to a dynamic and lively crowd fascinated by the eclectic artist.

With glasses of wine in hand, the space was a flutter of conversation and contemplation as guests enjoyed the ambiance of the evening and the thought-provoking images that lay before them.

From depictions of Alice in Wonderland to engravings of the Divine Comedy, Salvador Dali’s Surrealist interpretations are as mystifying and enigmatic today as they were sixty years ago, and the vibrancy of the colors with which he worked still have the ability to take hold of a room. The prints inspirational, if you closed your eyes long enough, the roar of the crowd subtly dulled leaving way for the soft melody of the guitar playing in the background to take you back to 1930’s Spain.

A balance of creativity and controversy, Dali’s work creates both a powerful statement and a commanding visual. Whether an art enthusiast or novice, the gallery is worthy of a visit; besides, there has to be something said about an artist who can bring dreams to a city that never sleeps.
