Louis Vuitton Salutes the 40th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing

Yes believe it or not it has been 40 years since Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. And on July 13th Luis Vutton threw a party to celebrate appropriately at the Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Wait..why was Luis Vuitton involved? This was thought, however upon further investigation I came to discover that as part of a new “core values” campaign Louis Vuitton brought together three figures who have had personal journeys that took them into space: Buzz Aldrin, who in the course of the historic Apollo 11 mission 20th and 21st July 1969, became the second man to set foot upon the Moon; Jim Lovell, the commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970, who heroically guided his crew back to the safety of Earth; and Sally Ride, who in 1983 became the first American woman to venture into space as a crew member on Space Shuttle Challenger.
The new visual can be seen at the Planetarium and was photographed by the amazing Annie Leibovitz, was shot on the high plateaux of the Californian desert, from where, on a clear night, the Moon takes on an almost supernatural intensity. The three astronauts are portrayed quietly surveying the sky from the battered pickup truck in which they have undertaken this journey together, each no doubt reliving an extraordinary memory. Beside them on the truck is Louis Vuitton’s Icare travel bag in Monogram canvas, an allusion to the mythological hero who also dreamed of flight. The tag line, in an echo of the late Neil Armstrong’s famous words in 1969, states: “Some journeys change mankind forever.”
Guests included a very pregnant and very beautiful Adriana Lima, Bryant Gumbel who thanked me for taking his picture I though he was going to cry (aww), Lance Bass who kind of blended into the crowd he walked right by me I barely noticed him, Jessica Szohr who I noticed give someone a very diva-like attitude for those of you who watch gossip girl (I don’t) you may know her. The always sweet and lovely Estelle also made an appearance, Patti Hansen was in the building, along with celeb stylist June Ambrose, Cassie who was sporting a mohawk, and Australian Model and Orlando Bloom’s main squeeze Miranda Kerr was in attendance. However, my favorite guests were astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell.
The party included free flowing specialty cocktails, Moet champagne, and delicious bites. However, it was about as much fun as you would think a party at a museum would be (dull). Nonetheless, it was amazing to e American heroes, and catch up with friends. I am sad to report that I did not get any space ice cream. I guess you can’t always get what you want.
Cheers,
Mo
