When I was on line waiting to get into the screening of SPREAD yesterday August 13th, I wondered about what’s up with Anne Heche and the male prostitutes. She appears in both SPREAD and the HBO comedy HUNG. I have to say that I like HUNG much better than SPREAD. HUNG is warm funny; SPREAD is cold and vacuous.

Ashton Kutcher stars as a male gigolo who uses sex to get stuff from rich women. We meet him as he picks up the rich lawyer Heche plays and insinuates himself into her life. I did not really care about the protagonists because I was told nothing about their background. The audience’s distance from these characters cleverly reflects the situation the film portrays, though.  Heche and Kutcher “get down to buiness” without taking the time to have a preliminary conversation.

SPREAD portrays the full force of women’s sexuality. The lawyer just wants sex for sex’s sake. She has the money to get what she wants. In other words, she is a woman who acts like a man. The film includes another woman who also acts like man: the male whore has a female counterpart. In the end, it seems as if she never saw PRETTY WOMAN. These characters do not save each other.

In the last scene, the tale involves a tail. The closing image addresses a male who spent his life treating woman like a piece of tail. To avoid spoilers, you will just have to see the movie if you want to understand my tale/tail commentary. People might enjoy the film’s hot sex and cold relationships.

The movie is in the theaters Now!
