Southampton was the place to be on Sunday for the 6th Annual RID (Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths) Summer Event, whose main purpose is to stop hospital infections. The stately home of Avis and Bruce Richards (CEO of Birds Nest Productions – www.birdsnestproductions.com) is well known on the social circuit as being a haven for philanthropy, and this past weekend was no exception.
The benefit’s guest roster read like a prestigious who’s-who list of New York’s star doctors, including Dr. Jeffrey Borer, Dr. Tracy Pfeifer, Dr. Steve O’Brien, Dr. Jeffrey Moses, Dr. Joel Kassimir, Dr. John Schaefer and Dr. Morrell Avram.

Former New York Lt. Governor and RID Founder/Chairman Betsy McCaughey, Ph.D. led the affair with a charismatic presentation on the cause, and explained why it is so important to her. Just a few years ago, infection risk was not a topic of priority in most hospitals, and RID was founded to spotlight this situation.
For families who have lost loved ones in hospitals due to complications from infection rather than the actual symptoms they suffered from, this is a very sensitive issue. Did you know that hospital infections kill as many people in the U.S. each year as auto accidents, breast cancer and AIDS combined? This is a staggering statistic!
With so many passionate people in attendance, there was an upbeat energy in the air despite discussing a grim subject on an overcast day that forced the lovely poolside brunch indoors due to rain. Even upon arrival, we were greeted at the door by an angelic young volunteer who handed out frozen treats from his ice cream cart while charmingly asking for donations.
Guests were also treated to gift bags chock full of goodies including products from Pureology, Clarins at Saks Fifth Avenue facial certificates, generous gift cards to Solstice Sunglass Boutique, as well as a complimentary conditioning treatment and blowout from Angelo & David Salon, just to name a few. Last but not least, everyone left with a handy Sprixx hand sanitizer dispenser that conveniently snaps on to your belt or handbag. Even our cherubic ice cream cart boy was sporting one on his pocket!
Cheers to another worthwhile charity event in the Hampton!
