About Indego Africa
Indego Africa is an innovative 501(c)(3) nonprofit social enterprise, currently the subject of a Harvard Business School case study, that partners with hundreds of women artisans in Rwanda on a fair trade basis to drive forward a market-driven, long-term solution to poverty in Africa. The Indego Africa social enterprise business model is simple yet ground-breaking: partner with co-ops of women artisans in Rwanda; sell the co-ops’ contemporary accessories and home décor products online and at 40+ high-end retailers in the U.S.; and return 100% of its profits to the co-ops for Indego Africa’s award-winning training programs in business, literacy, and computers – all taught by Rwanda’s top university students.
By forging a strategy based on transparency, long-term partnerships, and measuring social impact, Indego Africa, which was recently honored with an award for “Most Impact in a Partner Community” by the Fair Trade Federation, re-defines an outdated handicraft model of economic development and maps out a replicable blueprint for unleashing the power of women entrepreneurs in Africa.
