The fairytales that you were told as a child were merely moderate versions of the original stories. Told to terrify children from misbehaving, the tales were dark, violent, and horrific.
NIGHTMARE Haunted House, which has been New York City’s leading haunted attraction for the last eight seasons, has brought to life these twisted stories handed down from The Grimm Brothers, Aesop, and Hans Christian Anderson.
As victims wait to enter the forbidden forest, characters eerily haunt the lines, scaring unsuspecting guests. Greeted by Rapunzel, we were blindfolded and led into the haunted house by her “hair.” The complete darkness and disorientation heightened our senses, as actors pawed at our arms and legs.
Once in, we removed the blindfolds to found ourselves in an elaborately designed set, entering different cottages with each passing tale. We watched how our favorite childhood characters came to life and told the stories the way they were intended, in an interactive experience that is suitable for both children and adults. Keep an eye out for the secret room, you’ll be glad that you did.
The second section of the haunted house was a sensory assaulting 5-D experience in which you are a subject of a clinical psychological study, created to tap into people’s deepest fears.
Instead of the traditional type of haunt, NIGHTMARE takes a more artistic approach to their scares, created to be more eerie than in-your-face frightening. You won’t run from chainsaws, or be attacked by an ax murderer – they’ve captured the true essence of fear in a unique experience that will stay with you, even in your sleep.
