July 29th: Award-winning photographer (and Marc Ecko New Media executive) Peter Ruprecht showcased his exhibit at the grand opening of Splashlight’s new 50,000 square foot Soho location. The images were taken during Ruprecht’s recent trip to India and is entitled “The Monadic Nomad”. The exhibit also featured unique photographic images printed on sustainable “lokta” paper hand-made in Nepal.

The event, sponsored by Complex Magazine, William Grant & Sons, Evian and Coca Cola included over 40 photographs, an audio-visual installation, indigenous food, specialty cocktails and music. The artist will also be donating 10 percent of the proceeds to benefit Charity Water, a globally recognized non-profit that builds sustainable water projects for people in developing countries. Specifically, the collection will fund freshwater wells and sanitation projects in India.

I found the new Soho location for Splashlight Studios to be far different from their midtown location. The new space located is located on the 3rd floor of 1 Hudson Square. Getting off of the elevator I was greeted by long narrow hallways (that seemed to go in circles) aligned with Ruprecht’s work. Behind the elevators was an almost hidden but large event space reminiscent of a Soho loft.

We were told that we would be taken on a walk and have a chance to have a a tour and in-depth look into Ruprecht’s work. I used that as an opportunity to hit the bar! They were serving up some sort of citrus vodka concoction that wasn’t sitting well with Mo so I opted for a delicious mango and rum mojito, which was absolutely amazing! More than 1,000 people were in attendance last night including Marc Ecko, Heather Matarazzo, Jacob Young, Stella Maeve, Spencer Treat Clark, and figure skater Oxana Baiul. And Mo didn’t see any of them! Why? Umm..did I tell you how amazing those mojitos were? Mo was holding down the fort!

The photographs were breathtaking; the vividity of a woman washing her face in a lake or an elderly man napping against a pillar was astounding. My favorite was the image of the bejeweled woman (featured on the invite) who appears to look very mysterious and regal. The exhibit also included an art installation section that Ruprecht referred to as  “the chill room,” which was an installation of of sound and lighting.

Please check out images from the exhibit at ruprechtstudios.com

Cheers,
Mo
